Reading Log: It is expected that your student is reading every night. For now, you may select a book from home to read to with your student. Soon, your student will be receiving books from school which he or she should be reading to you. You can of course help your student if the books are too challenging, but we want our students focusing on reading the words to help build their reading knowledge and skills. Please make sure to glue this reading log into your student's homework notebook.
Poetry Homework: Every week during our reading lessons we will begin our reading lessons with a poem. As we read the poem in class we will focus on various different aspects of the poem including letter and letter sounds, sight words, rhyming and meaning of the poem. At home you and your student will have a daily assignment with the poem that will help the student build their ability to read this poem independently and understand it more deeply. We ask that this poem get taped or glued into your student’s homework notebook and the assignments completed daily.
Sight Words: The sight words for each week will be sent home as flash cards. These are integral to support your student’s ability to transition into higher reading levels throughout the year. We ask that you practice these sight words with your student daily, focusing on those he or she may not yet have mastered.
Math Worksheet: A daily math worksheet will be sent home that focuses on the standards and goals of the math lesson that day. This worksheet will mirror what was taught in school and help us determine what we need to focus on for the next day. Please help your student in reading the directions on the worksheet if this is challenging and support them as best you can.
Lastly, please make sure you are cleaning out your student’s folders daily. Graded homework and other flyers should be removed so that there is space in the folder for new papers to be sent home.
